Altering the closure on a Horse hair Sporran

We all know how difficult it is to open and close horse hairs and some other sporrans with a strap attached to the inside front and snapped to the back. Changing this requires the replacement to keep the front and back of the sporran aligned. I offer what I did.
Since the cantle uses the top center to attach. I used line 24 snaps to either side of center to close and align the front and back halves. Temporarily remove the cantle.

Punch the holes for the snaps - I went 5/8th inch to each side of the center cantle mount hole. The thickness of the front with the hair making it's "u-turn" in this area required long snap backs and some counter sinking to reach all the way throught and brad onto the female snap half. The back snaps were much easyier - align the front and back and press together to make placement impressions and punch the snap holes. I trimmed back the edging leather so that it wasn't in the way of the snap or its operation, installed and set the snaps. Reinstalled the cantle. and the leather nut covers using contact cement to lock the cantle nuts as well.

I left the old strap snap so that I can use the old strap to hang the sporran for storage/ livingroom decoration - LOL - I cover it with a clear plastic bag as I smoke and to keep dust off.

This requires the front and back to flex some or the snaps will be pried loose from the wallet etc in the bottom of the "pouch". I did a test run to the store with my stuff in the sporran and it stayed closed with no problems. It is as snap ( pun intended) to open and close. Only thing better would be a hinged cantle and good luck finding one. I would happily rebuild this whole thing to get the security of total enclosure!

Pants is only a present tense verb here. I once panted, but it's all cool now.

You did a very nice, clean job on those! I've also been visualizing different closures for the next sporran I attempt. This is probably not the answer for the style I envision but it's always good to see outside-the-box solutions, gets one thinking about possibilities.

    Enjoy your work!

Sounds like it was a lot of trouble, but the end result is very nice and professional looking. Well done!

Thanks all. I have the attitude, "If it ain't user friendly, make it so or toss it."

Am wearing my Rocky, Heratage of Scotland for the next few days with the "boat anchor" cross pin. Winds forecast up to 50 MPH in the afternoons wednesday thru saturday - would take Marilyn pics but I may be busy at the time

I'll bet those shoes nip a bit with a thick pair of kilt hose?...

Nice work on the closure by the way.
