Kilts at thrift stores..Goodwill,Value Village,etc??
Searching for kilts online is a great deal of fun but I'm curious how many here have ever found a kilt at a thrift store such as Goodwill, Value Village or the like. I keep checking the women's skirt racks as well as the purse section for sporrans with no luck so far. Could be a treasure out there somewhere!! Granted, if one is found it might fit but that can be dealt with like any other article of clothing.
Anyone find a treasure???

Yes, I was lucky enough to be visiting a local church that was having its monthly sale, and as I was talking to one of the ladies at a clothing table, lo and behold another women comes over and drops of a Royal Stewart kilt with hose. It was a little big around the waist and needed to be shortened, but at $10.00 I grabbed it. Never seen another one and probably never will. Right place, right time.

I've found a couple kilt-related things at thrift stores, like nearly new ghillie brogues (that actually fit!) and a clan badge (unfortunately, not my clan). I've also found some women's kilted skirts in appropriate tartans for the ladies in my life, like a Maple Leaf tartan skirt for my girlfriend and one in the Alberta provincial tartan that was too small for my mother, but that we took apart to make a sash for her.
For mens kilts, I've seen more at the local, hipster, vintage clothing shops, though these cost a bit more than what one might expect to pay at a thrift shop. These kilts have gone for anywhere between $40 and $200, but I've never found one in a tartan that I wanted. I did find one tweed Argyll jacket and an Eton/Spencer jacket, which I purchased and eventually sold because I wasn't thrilled with the way they fit me. I've seen many other Eton/Spencer jackets, as well as other short waisted military jackets that would work with a kilt.
So yeah, keep looking because you never know what you'll find!

Well, it's not impossible to find items, but you must be willing to dig. Good idea looking at women's department, as many will see a old kilt and label it a skirt. I've found items at :
-Hipster/retro clothing stores. (Never at mainstream charity stores)
-Rarely at church thrift stores/events.
-Once at a rummage sale sponsored by the local Scottish Rite hospital.

I have found alot of Harris tweed Jackets at Valve Village along with some tartan items and I
Have recently found about 7 tartan ties in wool . and I have found nice shoes to wear with a kilt . But never a kilt . I too look at the Purse section to find a sporran but no luck yet.
I Have heard of people finding sporrans in theft stores , it is fun to hunt this stuff.

Well, if you ever come to Toronto, make sure to head down to Kensington Market and check out the vintage chic stores. There is also an army surplus store down there that sometimes has regimental kilts.
