    Same old Question....Sort of

    Ladies and Gentlemen,
Ok...So it's not really the same old question, that of what one is supposed to wear under a kilt. Or not. My loving beautiful wife has already decreed that I shall at all times wear undergarments beneath my kilt, and to be honest the thought of sitting on a dirty stool at the pub with out makes me queasy. However I found myself in a quandary yesterday. Is it complete hearsay to wear tartan underwear that do not match the tartan of the kilt????

It's been a long strange ride so far and I'm not even halfway home yet.

In short, no. I suppose to be absolutely theoretically correct your underwear, if it happens to be tartan, should at least be of the same clan as the kilt, but frankly its none of any one's business what you wear under the kilt apart from , perhaps, your wife's.

You may be interested to know, in the not so distant past, when your kilt was delivered by one's kilt-maker there was always a pair, sometimes two pairs, of tartan boxer type shorts included, without being specifically ordered. I am not aware that this nice thought is included by any kilt-maker these days.

After seeing some of the historical pictures of socks that didn't even try to match the kilt, I'd say the more it clashes the better! haha

I'm trying to imagine why this would even be relevant. Underpants or not, your kilt should be the only part in contact with the small seat of a barstool.

It was not so much a "nice thought" as that these undertrews were simply regarded as a standard part of Highland Dress (civilian and officer).
From about the middle 30s, they were usually separately itemised. From about the middle 80s they ceased to be available.
