Highland Games Boy Scout Weekend

Hello all! I'm not sure this is the correct forum but I'm taking a stab at it...

We are looking into having a Highland Games themed Boy Scout Camporee weekend in October. I have a few ideas but am asking the rabble for their ideas on what type of games for boys/girls ages 10 - 21 and if there is/are a piper(s)/pipe band(s) that would be willing to donate their time on a Friday evening and Saturday evening to open and close the festivities.

We have not picked a date and the location will be in the Northern Virginia area...

BSA allows girls to play now?

BSA (Boy Scouts of America) has a coed Venturing program for kids between 14 (or 13 and finished 8th grade) and 21.

Tad, Camp Snyder is the obvious first thought for a location. I think its schedule fills very quickly.

For games, you might look at the traditional Highland games, tossing the caber and sheaf, and perhaps making bannock or oat cakes, either against the clock or for best taste or presentation, etc. It might also be worthwhile to see if Scottish Scouts have any special traditions or games which could be incorporated.

Don't forget golf. I've played and arranged several golf games at camp, where we had to make our own clubs. it's usually been an adult event when I've seen it, but perfectly appropriate for youth as well. just make sure the youth are not compeeting against the adults. possibly single adult scores, and youth foursomes with best ball rules.

Looks like the Longhorn Council came up with a pretty good program. I like the fact that they split the events into several different age groups. Is your event going to be geared toward Venturers, or will you invite Troops along as well? I ask this because it might make a difference if you have Co-ed events/teams or not. Have you considered any appropriately themed movie for the evening, or how about some traditional Scottish folk songs? I'm thinking you could have a very cool event patch too.

I do my scouting in the Longhorn council and yes our games are pretty good and well received. I've worked on staff of all we've conducted (10 years or so). If you'd pm me I can share my perspectives
