Kilt Alterations?
Can someone please point me in the direction of a good tailor or company that can trim a kilt? I got one from my older brother, but his waist is considerably larger than mine. I tried it on and even with the buckles in the last hole, it's still to big. Any thoughts or suggestions?
Thank you in advance.

It is often possible to make a kilt smaller by re-locating the straps and buckles.
Please see this thread by Barb T.

Doing this by yourself is not beyond the average person who knows which end of a needle you stick through first.
If your kilt is also a bit long please see this thread where I talk about a kilt alteration which made a kilt smaller and also shorter.

This is a bit more involved but could be done by yourself. This would require the special skill of knowing how to get the thread to go through the fabric at the same time as the needle.
If you don't think you want to tackle this yourself I think you will find that altering a kilt is best done by a kiltmaker. Most tailors and seamstresses have no experience with kilts. They do not know what is inside, behind the liner.

I had outstanding results from our own Bonnie Heather Greene just a few months ago. She took in my 8-yard tank, and now it fits beautifully.

Having had a similar alteration done, I would say definitely go to a kiltmaker, s/he will know how the kilt is constructed and how to keep the front apron symmetric.
As Steve says, you can make small adjustments by moving the straps or buckles but if you need to reduce by more than an inch or two, the front apron will wrap round too far.

After viewing the articles about moving the straps, I am going to try it myself! Will post on results
