To Buy or Not to Buy. That is my question........

I own two different sporrans at present. A dress sporran that is black and white fur with St. Andrew at the top of the silver cantle and a day time sporran which I think of as a hunting sporran; it is seal skin and brown.
My wife and I are attending a ball next month and I was thinking of purchasing a new sporran. I wear MacFarlane Hunting tartan (green) and for this ball I will wear my Montrose Doublet with jabot, lace cuffs and fly plaid (the whole shebang).

But I was thinking of getting a Royal Regiment Sporran............... There is a famous portrait with a MacFarlane ancestor our Clan Chief at the time and he is sporting a nice regimental sporran. So would it look out of place? Or because I have not served in Her Majesty's regiment "look but not touch?" Thanks for the help guys.

I would go ahead and buy it. Is it a scottish/tartan ball? If it is not it is unlikely anyone would know, and many members here have ex-MoD sporrans.

If you like that style of sporran, then go for it. My one caveat is that you should make sure there are no insignia or badges that would identify it as part of a uniform. When dressed in civilian attire, it is best to "de-comission" military items before use in order to avoid an unintended disrespect...

Yes, my regimental motto was a favourite for bikers and belt buckles, really used to annoy me.

If it is actually seal, he'll only have a problem if he attempts to take it across a border.

Yes, this is it! There are no insignia's by what I can see, just the style of the sporran. About my seal skin, it is older than the hills themselves and has a nice day look to it. I have never tried to cross a boarder with it and probably never will as I think it is a 7 out of 10 as far as sporran's rank.
