For civilian and non band situations, the short answers are, no and no.

Does it look like I don't know what I'm doing if im wearing it without spats? I wanted to wear it for a solo piping gig next Sunday, but my spats have not come in yet. They are on back order.
    Thanks
    mike

I am no expert on piping matters and no doubt those that know far more than I about these things, will chip in before long.

Absolutely no problem. I have never worn spats. I have a lovely horsehair sporran from Kinloch Anderson and wear it to appropriate events. Just look at yourself in the mirror and make sure you look good. Go for it.

Is there a requirement to maintain a standard of uniform? If this is just "you" and not representing a band or other set-uniform organization, it shouldn't matter. I've seen plenty of pics of HorseHair sporrans without spats accompaniment.
