Argyle top hose cuffs

I just got a pair of argyle top hose. I didn't realize the cuffs were so big and the sock so long.

If I fold the tops down where they would normally go, they'd be above the knee.

Maybe I just have short shins, but what's the best way to fold the tops down so they're not covering almost half my legs and aren't too bulky with sock underneath?

Find yourself an experienced knitter. She/He can shorten the hose by removing the argyle top, removing the extra length, then re-attaching the argyle top. Make sure you take the hose to the knitter to put the hose on to mark the new length - one you remove the excess, you don't want to have to put any back on. Gift in hand will also help with the refit. (Nothing stronger than tea or coffee before fitting!)

This is one time when you really need to see the knitter to get the right fit.

I did a short tutorial a couple of years ago on here with pictures to show what I do in this situation. It seemed to go over well. I will see if I can resurrect the thread.

I have some hose like that and my legs have always reached the ground so I don't think they are too short. Bring the tops of the hose all the way up above the knee (up your thigh.) Fold the hose down to the proper height below the knee, then double the top edge of the hose back up to where the chosen top is, forming a triple layer (rather than double.) This gives you a nice thick cuff. Tuck the very top edge under to give a neater look.

Here are the photos I used to show what I do when the hose are too long. Hopefully I can post them to this post.
pic.1 lay the hose out full length with the hose top outside in.

pic.2 pull the hose top down over the hose itself until the bottom of hose top is 2 to 3 inches over the hose.

pic.3 fold decorative top of hose over this and the hose are now about 3 inches shorter

pic.4 shows the layering inside the fold over of what was just done.

Were they 'country' socks you bought, YOJiM? If so, they are not intended for wearing with the kilt, but just below the knee with plus fours. You will have to either shorten them or fold them with more bulk in the cuff.
