Tartan reference
Hello All!
Can anyone recomend a good Tartan reference book. I am particularly interested in the Distric Tartans and a more comprehensive Tartan list in general. I am in possesion of "Tartan For Me" but there are no illustative plates. BTW if you are in need of a good cross reference for surnames and Tartans; "Tartan for Me" is a gold mine.
Bill
May all your blessings be the ones you want and your friends many and true.

Tartan Reference...
"World Tartans" by Ian Zaczek is a handy little reference guide, filled with many different clan, family, district, provincial, state, corporate, etc. tartans with brief descriptions. It is sold out, according to Barnes & Nobles' web site.
The same author also has written the BEST Reference book on Tartans, "The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Tartan", which is available through Borders/Amazon.com and Barnes and Noble:
http://search.barnesandnoble.com/boo...54813398&itm=3
Another "must-have" is "Scottish Clan & Family Encyclopedia" by George Way and Romilly Squire:
http://search.barnesandnoble.com/boo...60711208&itm=1
While not a tartan book per se, it is the BEST book about the Clan system, and Romilly Squire is a Herald with the Lyon Court and a Heraldic expert.
Neil Grant's "Scottish Clans & Tartans: A Fully Illustrated Guide to Over 140 Clans - Their History,Tartans , and Much More" is also a good general work, but it only really has the major Clans & families -- no district, corporate, etc. tartans.
Finally, "District Tartans" by Philip Smith and Gordon Teall is an excellent (but expensive) resource for the District/Provincial/State tartans:
http://search.barnesandnoble.com/boo...6830852&itm=21
And, I would be remiss in not recommending the Scottish Tartans Authority:
www.tartansauthority.com
and the Scottish Tartans Museum in Franklin, NC:
http://www.scottishtartans.org
Bottom Line: "Illustrated Encyclopedia of Tartan" and "Scottish Clan & Family Encyclopedia" are the "must haves".
Cheers!
Todd

I got that book for Christmas one year and refer to it all the time. Great little reference book to have on hand.
