Are Most Scottish Robertsons of Clan Donnachaidh

Or is Robertson sometimes a sept of another clan? The location in 1800 was Renfrewshire if that is relevant.

McElmurry , yes , to the best of my knowledge most ( if not all ) Robertsons are " The Clan Donnachaidh ".

I am not aware of Robertson being a sept of some other clan , however , there are certainly many clans that are a sept of Robertson .

There may be an exception to this , but in general , this is usually the case .

The Robertsons are the Donachaidah, one and the same. The names are interchangeable. The Scottish clan website is worth a look and somewhere there is a link to research that identifies the spread of the Robertsons across Scotland.

One has to bear in mind that Clan Robertson claim descent from one particular Robert. As a forename, Robert was common throughout the UK and most sons of Robert won't have anything to do with Scotland, let alone Clan Donnachaidh. Even in Scotland, the same is probably true of those sons of Robert that lived in Lowlands, particularly pre-1800.
