argyle sweater vest

I recently purchased an argyle sweater vest on ebay (brooks brothers). I really like the way the pattern and color work with a lot of different combinations of colors. I believe it works well with the traditional kilted look.

What does the rabble think?

A sweater vest with a kilt is normally a good combo in my opinion. The length of yours is fine without doubling under the hem. There is no interference with a sporran in your case.

If you're asking about checks worn with stripes (or diamonds in this case) I wouldn't worry about it. Your attitude will dictate how the match will be received by others. I heard combining the different patterns was taboo when I was a child. I have learned since (fifty years later) that there are some items that seem to belong together. Your vest and kilt qualifies as a fit to me. Wear this with good cheer.

I think it works. As for patterns with patterns, I've heard it works so long as there is a size difference between the two patterns.

I think that it looks really nice. Very mature and non-cookie cutter. A variety of hose would work well in addition to what you're wearing (hard to tell the shade you have on)...mid-gray, ancient green, etc...

They are lovat green glenmore hose from house of cheviot. The lighting in my living room isn't great for photos unfortunately.

Ps. I do need some more hose, I only have brown and lovat green and blue.

I think "ancient green" is near the mark, but then I'm also colour blind so could be quite wrong!

My understanding is that now and in the US (so I don't know how it would apply to Highland dress), mixing patterns is okay so long as there are no more than three with plain being neutral. Kind of like with colors with white and black being neutral in style.

My hose are plain as is the shirt. The tie is navy with a diamond pattern texture. So basically I just have the two patterns, check and diamond.

I like that Highland dress seems to emphasize color and pattern though. My wife thought I should wear my solid navy sweater vest but it just seems kind of boring to me as we were getting dressed for Christmas Eve service.

My wife said, "Aren't the diamonds too large for the kilt's checks?" She then expounded on distracting attention from the kilt pattern and color.

My retort was, "I have seen photos of his smile, Should he remain stoic or will his huge grin draw attention from his kilt also?" We're still working on issues of me dressing in a kilt. Three years and I've had a long row to hoe, but I see the turning point ahead.

I see two segments of your outfit that work well together. My wife also has to (as Liam proclaimed) "un-learn" her youthful training.
