MoR,
I was referring to the current chief's father.

How the MacBean was elected is a very interesting story.
Here are the most recent (to my knowledge) guidelines on the holding of a Derbhfine.

So was I. It was my understanding (possibly erroneous) that the previous McBain chief had "proved up".

MacBain chief
I don't know about that end of the story. Just that the then new chief was able to purchase former clan real estate, built a memorial there for the MacBain/MacBean diaspora to pilgrimage to.

Is this the late Hughston McBain of McBain you are referring to?

Hughston McBain of McBain was the Chairman of the Board of the Marshall Fields Company, and by dint of hard labor, a very wealthy man. By all accounts, he was a larger than life character and used his not inconsiderable wealth for the benefit of the Chicago Scottish community. As clan chief he also used it to the benefit of McBains everywhere by buying property in Kinchyle (the ancient McBain homeland) and erecting a cairn to the clan.
As far as I am aware Hughston McBain of McBain came into the chiefship of Clan McBain by right of inheritance, not by election of an ad hoc derbhfine.

He was also the chief who approached Astronaut Alan Bean to carry a bean of MacBean tartan with him on the Apollo 12 mission.

I'm guilty of having my heart outweigh my head on occasion and this was certainly one. It is difficult to get a feel of an intended message out of words alone. I don't do this strictly for the forum's sake but as a fellow who stepped over the line and see as much. Family is a strong source of pride and may we all be so lucky as to have ours around as long as the good Lord sees fit!
Oberu, no apology is needed-- there is no way that I would ever take offense at someone's passionate pride in family or race. In my book it's a good thing, especially now when we seem to live in a time when many would appear to work to tear down the basic structure of home, hearth, and family.
