Unexpectedly windy... Uh oh!

Today I walked (kilted) to work, and the weather was pretty calm. But at the end of the day when it was time to walk home, it was very windy... Could have been an incredibly awkward walk home.

So I considered what I had at my disposal for a bit. First I thought about using my kilt pin to hook the middle pleat to the under apron, between my legs. Really not wanting to go that route, I quickly came up with this way to keep my pleats down -

Tied my nice, heavy sweater around the back, about level with the bottom of by pleats, tucked the sleeves under my sporran... It was solid.

How have you dealt with such situations?

I haven't really run into this problem, yet, thankfully!

But I gotta say, I'm still lovin' that tartan! That is one fine lookin' kilt, my friend!

I'm loving it too... I've actually had a bunch of people asking what it'd take to get the other piece of this fabric. Been considering putting it up for the best offer.

I had one of those "OMG! what am I going to do?" moments the very first weekend I wore a kilt. While wearing, of all things, a 4 yard PV casual.

My first day out in public in a kilt was day one of my local Sacramento games. I even brought a pair of shorts along just in case this whole kilt wearing thing turned out to be a big mistake. Fortunately day one went off without a hitch, and I was looking forward to day two. Since day one went so well I felt no need to bring along the shorts for day two. I pull into the parking lot at the games next to a full sized motor home and got out of my truck...swoosh! wind tunnel effect between my truck and the motor home!! I quickly jumped back into my truck, and with panic, looked over onto the passenger seat for my shorts "Sh%#" !! I left them at home" I realized to my self.

Well it's a 45 minute drive back home to get them, so what to do? I gathered all my manly composure and stepped out of the truck once again...no wind...and started nervously walking towards the gate. About 20 steps further on... swoosh! wind gust sends the kilt upwards again. I instinctively slap my arms to my side to hold the kilt in place and about that time look up to see if anyone was responding to my quick moment of immodesty. No one laughing and pointing , but I did notice an adolescent girl in a skirt walking towards the gate, quite comfortably, with her arms held down at her sides. Then it hit me "Hell, women have been wearing skirts in the wind for a very long time, and my ancestors have been wearing kilts long before that, MAN UP!" I followed the young lady's lead and held my arms down to my side and walked along as if I was born to that behavior (at least that's how I was hoping I looked).

I had a few other close calls that day, but learned to anticipate the wind and place my arms close to my sides when it got a little breezy. Since then, heavy weight wool kilts have solved much of the problem, but I still remember the "Arms at your side" pose when in potentially windy conditions.

Thanks for triggering that traumatic memory NeightRG...now I have to go call my therapist....

May not have coined it, but Riverkilt calls it the "Marilyn moment" and has told several amusing stories. I think "smile and wave" is the best response, myself (but then, as I remind folks here, I'm a girl).

MacMillan's Son - in the last year or so, I've watched girls in skirts very closely... There's no way to say that without sounding creepy. But indeed - there's a lot to learn from them.
Sydnie - I've actually wanted to re-create the "Marilyn moment" for a kilted self portrait for a while now... Just a little more private.

Perhaps you are better off. Consider Bob's comment at a Games when I was drawing his attention to the difference between kilts pleated to the sett vs. stripe: "I've never spent so much time looking at men's behinds!"
