I agree-- I only wear tall feathers on official occasions, the rest of the time the feathers are actually part of my badge.

That looks great Harold. Another masterclass in your DIY skills.
I have a question though and forgive my ignorance but what is the significance of the feather(s). I thought that they could only be worn by clan chiefs ? Or am I confusing myself with cockades.
Friends stay in touch on FB simon Taylor-dando
Best regards

Well done, Harold! I like the look of the second feather (the mature Golden Eagle tail feather, correct?) as opposed to the Golden Eagle 'spike' depicted in the third photo, but they both look very smart with your new crest, well done! Great company to work with...Real Legal Feathers.
Cheers,

As you are well aware, Scott, another option could be a simple plain circlet with motto and crest, leaving out the (white)metal feather(s), or as in Harold's case, the crest and wreath by itself. A matter of the armiger's personal preference, naturally!
Cheers,

Grizzly,
Per this page from Lord Lyon's website, Chiefs of Clans (chief of the senior line in some cases) may wear three feathers, Clan Chiefs (or chieftains) may wear two, armigers of a clan may wear one feather.
I know that some chiefs have also granted permission to the president of the clan society to wear two feathers as the Chief's personal representative on clan business. Sort of an 'honorary chieftan' of the clan. The feathers go with the office, not the individual. Whether that's 'legal' per Lyon I can't say.
Cockades are another thing entirely. Usually they're seen worn by members of the Scottish Regiments and/or pipe bands with a military-style uniform.

Lord Lyon actually has no say in the wearing of feathers. That is up to the Chief of the Clan. He has stated this on a few occasions. Cockades are worn by the military and civillians alike there are several different versions that a person can choose from.

A traditional approach is to wear a cockade made of the livery colours of one's chief, or if armigerous, your own livery colours, which may be the same as your chief, or different. There are several Macphersons that wear a cockade made of azure and or coloured grosgrain ribbon - Cluny's livery colours.
Cheers,
