unixkenAll of this being said however, let us consider the flip side of the coin...

If I were to design an unrestricted tartan, and the royal family (or anyone else) then registered a variant that differed in only the most subtle ways, and they restricted their variant, I most certainly would take offense with anyone misidentifying my unrestricted tartan as their own restricted variant and causing someone grief over it.
    Yes, that's a good point.

    So Sorry!

    Hi, dear Rabble.
I apologise profusely for taking so long to answer all your questions
Long story, circumstances beyond my control, but I hope the following pics will help.
Oh my God! - will somebody please tell me how to submit a photo?
Serious! - I wish to submit photo of my new kilt, and a copy of my reply from the Queen.

Granted, the SRT hasn't been the only registration body over the years.
Keep in mind that these tartans were created in the 1930s. There were NO tartan registries at that time, and consequently no one to register them with. Even today, people tend to overestimate the "power" that either the National Tartan Register or the Scottish Tartans Authority have. Either bodies can, if they so choose, refuse to record the details of a specific tartan for various reasons - one of which being similarity to a preexisting tartan. However, that does not stop me from having a mill produce the tartan and call it whatever I wish.

If I, as a private citizen, can do that, how much more so if I were the Royal Family!

How did the belief that the kilt in question was worn at the Royal Wedding of 1981 ( The Prince of Wales to Lady Diana Spencer ) come about? No member of the Royal Family wore a kilt to the wedding to the best of my recollection ( and if they did, they would have worn the Royal Stuart tartan ). The Queen's Piper does not wear the tartan in question. Who else would have worn a kilt?

At the top of the box into which you type your reply are a number of icons. The third one to the right of the smiley face is the one for submitting pictures. it gives you a number of steps to upload small jpgs from your own computer or to refer to a picture that is elsewhere online by using the URL for it.

This is what I was originally thinking as well, Sandy. I just didn't vocalise it.

Am I right, Father Bill, in believing that, in personal messages, only the URL route is possible (which can be quite a nuisance)?
