And the universal tartans are always a great choice. I know that Black Watch is worn a LOT but you know, it is still classy and a delight. I wear that tartan the most followed by the Hunting tartan from Sportkilt and then my own Clan Ross tartan on special occasions.

Indeed. I can certainly vouch for these games, being originally from St. Louis and a regular attendee. It's a top-notch event! I will be there in September.

Did you now? Wondeful! I have spent many summers right in that area! I love Badenoch in the summer, especially whilst hill-walking around Creag Dhubh. Were you able to visit the Clan Macpherson Museum and House just up the road from Laggan in Newtonmore? Perhaps fish n’ chips and a cold pint at The Glen right across the street? I have Macpherson cousins that live in Laggan and Glentruim, and my great aunt and uncle live in Kingussie, just a few miles north of Newtonmore. We will be back in Badenoch beginning the first weekend in August for my clan's annual gathering and rally.

@Kyle, we were Creag-Na-Sanais cottage at Breakachy Lodge. The area was wonderful but didn't get a chance to tour the museum. Another time .

Yes, you are correct that Ewan Macpherson of Cluny's, affectionately called Ewan of the '45 by the clan, wife took refuge at Breakachy. Cluny himself hid in and around Badenoch after Culloden, most notably in "his cave" on the face of Creag Dhubh. For 8 long years he did this, having some close calls with the Redcoats and without a single Macpherson clansman or clanswoman giving him up. Pretty remarkable. There is a memorial cairn located on a plot of land donated to the Clan Macpherson Association in 1996 by the late Euan Macpherson of Glentruim, Laird of Glentruim, dedicated to Ewan of the '45.

There is a absolutely fantastic CMA publication that tells the story of the Badenoch men in the Rising of 1745 and its aftermath with particular focus on Colonel Ewan Macpherson of Cluny who was their leader. It's called, A Day's March to Ruin by Alan G. Macpherson of Newfoundland. Alan's direct ancestor hails from Culloden, yet did not take part in the battle since the Macpherson (Badenoch) Regiment at the time were involved in a skirmish further south of the now imfamous moor, thus resulting in the Macphersons arriving too late.

I will say to what Jock, Kyle, and others have said.

The blood is important...but not everything, as history has proven. Clans were not always "family" in the biological sense.

Adoption, shifting loyalties, the desire to branch out, territorial disputes, tragedy, marriage, war, famine, disease, wealth, luck, and pride--all of these are just some of the reasons that clan allegience might sway over the years and effect a migration of peoples and their clan loyalties.

Shaw, our clan, are found all over Scotland. Which ones are we? Who knows.

We diaspora were kind of given a bit of a disadvantage (geneologically speaking) when our ancestors came to America. They usually went out of their way to sever ties and walk away. Mine did, for sure.
