If you want to jump into kiltmaking I highly recommend taking one of Elsie Stuehmeyer's classes. She's getting up in age and who know how much longer she'll want to travel all over doing these workshops. She's a treasure for sure, full of knowledge but also of many wonderful stories from the 1940s up through today. (I don't know if she travels to the UK though. I wonder who the UK equivalent might be, if anyone.)

No machine-sewing is required; I did my kilt entirely by hand.

I wish I knew how to use a sewing machine though! It would open up many new things.

My first attempt will be a machine stitched Utilikilt style for scouts and bushcraft and once I'm confident I'll progress to a 'real' kilt.
I'm tempted to try my hand at making a jacket sometime as well once I think I'm good enough, and also, thanks to my eldest, planning on attempting a casual ghillie shirt style affair as well. Which I will machine stitch as these will be working garments.
Now I know how to use the machine, it's opening up all sorts of possibilities, and drastically reducing my TV time.
