I have one kilt that had to be modified for a kilt pin, and that one is about 3" from the lower hem. Since then, I find I have been moving them up to mid-thigh. I have discovered that do this decreases the chance of snagging anything while dancing.

Now--if only I could figure out how to wear a fly plaid in a manner that allows for dancing!
EPITAPH: Decades from now, no one will know what my bank balance looked like, it won't matter to anyone what kind of car I drove, nor will anyone care what sort of house I lived in. But the world will be a different place, because I did something so mind bafflingly eccentric that my ruins have become a tourist attraction.

Ordered mine through Badge and Wallet. They do custom collar insignia, which works fine for kilt pins too.

Have more on order with them now - doing my civil war ancestor's units to add to my Federal Memorial tartan kilt as kilt pins.

    Here are my pins:

I wear them on my thigh. Not too low, not too high.

The only kilted Highland regular regiment in Scotland which wore kilt pins was The Gordon Highlanders and they wore them like this

The army has long been a bastion of tradition in the manner of Highland Dress (maintaining a number of features which have long fallen out of civilian Highland Dress). Taking a look at the army way can help 'calibrate they eye' to older ways of doing things, in many cases.

Also when I started wearing Highland Dress in the 70s, most of the people I saw wore their kilt pins fairly high, centred, more or less, between the kilt selvedge and the bottom of the jacket.

    Like this

Note that in both the military and civilian cases above the kilt pin is centred on a main element in the tartan.

I generally wear mine so the top falls just about where the first joint of my index finger falls. That way I can check to ensure the damn thing's still there; I've lost a couple.
