Richard,
Many time KILTMAKERS make Lochcarron's backwards (\\\\) b/c that's the way other mills do it and \\\\\ is the most common "correct" way for the twill to run, so they THINK they're doing it face out, but in reality it's backwards.
Honestly, it doesnt really matter much as I said above, so long and the knots and slubs aren't visible.

Interestingly I have 7 kilts from 3 different kilt makers and most likely different mills. I know a couple of them are from Marton Mills and at least one from Lochcarron.. The twill line on all 7 go from my right hip to the bottom left of the apron when worn.

Hey Stitchwiz, I believe without the "OC" compunction of both Anne and Barb, I wouldn't learn as much as I do. My earlier comment about checking one's kilt collection was sort of rhetorical. Since it's a holiday and I'm supposed to be on my best behavior, I'll refrain from the words, "made you look!" My Thanks to you all here.

One of the Lochcarron tartans, Auld Scotland, was examined by Elsie Stuehmeyer, and it was she who decided which was the correct side. Not her first time to the rodeo.

Understood it's not her first rodeo... I'm just repeating what I was told by Lochcarron about their cloth.

My Lochcarron 16oz Stewart Hunting runs /////

As a non-kiltmaker I never payed attention until this thread came up. Interesting...
