Good for you, Norbo. The wonderful thing about girls and their mothers is that they can wear tartan at that length. And should she grow tall enough for the kilt to hang at her knees, she could still wear it (provided she hasn’t outgrown it, in which case it will be time to pass the kilt on to her sister and get her something more suitable).

Seldom get any remark when wearing the kilt, but then when I do nowadays I am usually playing the pipes, which both intimidates hoi polloi, and makes it difficult for me to hear what they may be saying ;-3)

This time last year I'm kilted in Walmart and this large cornfed looking country boy looks at me and says"nice skirt" and waits for my reply. I look over at him and reply "it is a nice kilt, isn't it?" He looks me up and down, pauses and says" it takes a lot of balls to dress like that around here". I look him in the face and say "yes it does, doesn't it.." and wait. He then laughs and admits he's worn one himself at a Highland game in Albuquerque, and was apparently fishing for a reaction.

It's been so long since I last received an insult about being kilted that I honestly can't even remember the occasion or the insult. What I do hear a lot, though, and what really bugs me are the moronic comments about bagpipes. Every piper who's been playing a few years, I'm sure, has heard these idiotic comments a few hundred times. You all know the ones: "What's the difference between a bagpipe and an onion?"; "What's the difference between roadkill and a bagpiper?"; "Why do bagpipers always walk around while playing?"; "A true gentleman is one who..."; etc. What floors me is that the morons who come out with these cracks always seem to think they have said something highly original and very witty. I first heard all of these in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Nowadays, I just look the idiots in the eye as they stand there expecting me to acknowledge their wit, say "That's the 500th time I've heard that one" and walk away.

Maybe I am the most fortunate guy around in this regard. I have been wearing kilts for almost a decade now and I have received nothing but positive comments from people, from casual interest to remarkable enthusiasm. I suppose some of the quick shouts from passing vehicles could have been sarcastic but they have never sounded that way.

As others here have pointed out, wearing a kilt seems to imbue a certain...casual confidence that others notice yet not see as threatening. Perhaps there is a scientific study just waiting to happen to explain all this.

Rick I think it depends how often you go out in one and were you go . if your out with friends or in a group I don't think you are likely to get any comments but if your out on your own or with a child and you across a group of people out side a pub your more likely to get comments .
Frankly I look forward to the next person trying to be smart . I love shooting people down and making them feel small and stupid in front of there mates.
But like most people nice comments are far more common.
