Comprehensive Guide to Kilted Faux Pas
Hello everyone! I am looking forward to possibly acquiring a kilt and associated outfit, but as I read this forum, I notice that there are many potential beginner mistakes that can be made, particularly from the point of view of the more conservative "kilt kops". I'm asking for those with such views to post all the common (and uncommon) newbie (or veteran) mistakes, from white hose to ghillie brogues to Prince Charlies in the daytime. In particular, I'm looking for the tiny details that generally are overlooked, particularly in the age of rental PCs. Hopefully this thread can end up a comprehensive guide to TCHD.
However, I would not be surprised if such a resource already exists, and if so, I would of course be quite grateful if I could be redirected to it.
Thanks all in advance!

One of the common ones, related to the PCs during the day, is simply over dressing for the occasion.

...all the common (and uncommon) newbie ... mistakes,
Need we mention the pleats go in the back? And that the basting stitches used for initial packing and transport should be removed prior to donning the kilt? (I've seen both errors exhibited in the wild.)

Cameron Cat, I like your sig'. I have a copy of a letter, from Graham Hill to Chapman regarding that quote. Driving the Lotus 49C. Written post shunt, serious mechanical failure. If memory is correct, Monaco or Spain / '68-'69. Complaining about the latter part of the quote.

Thanks guys, this helped, although I was thinking more along the lines of the more subtle and nitpicky type details. I suppose I wasn’t very clear in my original post.

Unfortunately, subtle and nitpicky details are where you're almost certain to never get a consensus.

I think it would interest me to hear the opposing views contributing to such a lack of consensus.

Nitpicky is in the eye of the beholder. Things, perhaps, such as
sporran drop - top of sporran about a hand width from top of natural waist kilt
kilt hem - top of knee, or mid-cap
hose - top is hand-width ish below knee. respect the calves for looks
hose - some folks are OCD about the lines running perfectly straight up the shins
flashes - about 3 and 9 o'clock respective legs. Not too much "fly", they peek out ..kinda
(there's a balance to hose top turn-down and flash length, experiment. If the top is really long, double the fold)
belt with vest - not usually
belt with sweater - not usually, but am today since the office temp can be finicky and I like the look with a shirt - certainly not over the sweater
(belt - not required at all, actually, but can look nice)
no need to always think of the kilt as "special" - just wear stuff with it that looks good to you. Don't over dress; clothes, not costume
shoes - yes. most times
hat - don't wear them usually, but when I do I don the ones I'd usually wear excepting ball cap
overcoat - just about anything in the closet, except the really long over coat (think of the visual, and you'll get why)
These are my opinion, of course, and some of the nitpicky things I think about when getting ready for the day or event
(cue music..)
Hoses and flashes and leather and ribbons
sporrans and jackets and jumpers and kilt-pins
wearing a kilt gives your step quite a spring
don't fuss too much about nitpicky things
