Vindolanda is an exceptional venue and well worth taking the time to visit. There are so many Roman and other early sites in the UK that are mostly overlooked. I'm fortunate to live three miles from the site of Inchtuthil Legionary Fort.

BTW if any of your group are Craft Beer people I highly recommend Shilling Brewing. Beyond being a brewery they feature craft beers from all over Scotland, a one-stop virtual craft beer tour of the country.

My favorite bit of Vindolanda was the oldest known bit of a woman's writing in existence. The soldiers charged with burning the camps correspondence were careless and did not destroy it. It was a letter from the commander's wife to her sister planning a birthday party. What a believable bit of trivia.

For a few ideas and ways to keep on top of spending, itison is useful. Both the website and phone app. It will have days out (distillery tours often pop up), restaurants offering deals and accommodation offers pretty much all over the country but with an emphasis in the cities, especially Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Oban and Fort William are doable on a day trip. Train leaves Glasgow around 08:20 and divides at Crianlarich with portions for Oban or Fort William. It is possible to go on the train to Oban and return from Fort William or vice versa as there is a good bus service along the coast between Oban and Fort William.

About 2 years, when I was heading to Edinburgh to collect my tour group, I decided to take the scenic route though Hawick, Selkirk and Galashields to scope out some options for a private tour I was putting together - on a personal level I had also thought to visit Lochcarron and Lovat Mill - but on checking beforehand both are closed at the weekend and the only day I could go was a Saturday - still a nice drive and to other options worked out well...
