    The Holyrood Tartan

I nderstand that this tartan was first "presented" to the world in 1980 by Locharron, so it's not a clan tartan. Holyrood is the royal palace in Edinbugh, an it's also currently the seat of the Scottish Parliament.

OK, all that I know, but can anyone contribute anything further on this tartan and what it represents? I think it's a beauty, now that I've paid close attention to it in the samples I just maailed out AND....*insert drum roll here*

    ...it's available in poly-viscose.

It sounds like it's rather like the National Millenium tartan, and again anyone can wear it without danger of stomping on anybody's cultural heritage.

    Alan,

This is what the Tartans of Scotland website
    (http://www.tartans.scotland.net/tart...tartan_id=2444)
has to say about Holyrood tartan:

Holyrood is the Scottish equivalent of Buckingham Palace, the Queens official residence in Scotland. She is guarded by 'The Royal Company of Archers', a non military force provided by the chiefs of the clans. A sample of the Holyrood tartan was presented to the Scottish Tartans Society by Lochcarron Weavers in 1980.

    Holyrood...

And one more definition, the word itself refers to church nomenclature: a Holy Rood" is a cross or crucifix above the chancel of a church. You will sometimes see in some churches a depiction of the crucifixion on a wooden beam above the steps leading to the sanctuary, where the altar is -- this is a "Holy rood", or "rood screen".

    Cheers,

    Todd

A measure of the importance of Holyroodhouse is the status of its Keeper, who was appointed to oversee the Palace in the absence of the court. There were various grants of the office of Keeper of Holyroodhouse until 1646 when Charles I conferred it heritably on the 1st Duke of Hamilton, whose descendants have retained it ever since. The post is one of the Great Offices in the Royal Household in Scotland. As well as his own deputy, the Keeper still appoints the Bailie of Holyroodhouse, who is responsible for law and order within the Holyrood Abbey Sanctuary.

There was formerly a separate hereditary Keeper of Holyrood Park, which surrounds Holyroodhouse, held by the Earls of Haddington. This was purchased by the Crown and the office extinguished in 1843 after disputes over the Keeper's right to allow quarrying within the Park.

Whether or not Scotland currently has a Parliament might be an issue for some discussion, eh? As in, <sarcasm ON> "So THAT'S what that overdue, expensive eyesore is supposed to be?" <sarcasm OFF>

Sorry, Daz, I couldn't pass that one by. ;) Maybe after 2007...

And to keep the Thread Police in good cheer , I do find the tartan to be an attractive one.
