Regimental Days...

Here's two more dates to add:
25 October, 1739
The six independant companies of the "Highland Watch" or the “Black Watch”, originally raised in 1729, along with four newly-raised companies, were incorporated into a Regiment of Foot under John, the Earl of Crawford. This Regiment was originally numbered the 43rd Highland Regiment, but was renumbered as the 42nd in 1749.
22 July, 1758
The 42nd Highland Regiment, the “Black Watch”, is given its 'Royal' designation.
These are both great days to break out that Black Watch kilt that many of us bought as one of our first kilts.
Good ideas, Dave. Each of the Scottish regiments (as well as other regiments of the British Army) have their own particular regimental day, be it the "birthday" of the regiment, or a commemoration of a battle that the regiment fought in. So, for instance, one of the regimental days for the Gordon Highlanders was Dargai Day, 20 October 1897, when the Gordons, along with the Second Gurkha Rifles, stormed the heights of Dargai in Afganistan. During the attack, one of the Gordons pipers, George Findlater, was shot through the ankles, but continued to play to rally the troops. Findlater later received the VC for his actions.

So, all of you Gordons out there, wear the tartan on 20 October for Piper Findlater!
There are so many regimental days that if you wear a tartan associated with a regiment (Goverment, Mackenzie, Gordon, Stewart Hunting, Leslie, etc.) you can find a number of "reasons" to wear a tartan!
Cheers,
Todd

Just looked at the XMarks calendar. What I was thinking was similar, but maybe a bit easier to add an item, and specifically for a 'Why today' kinda thing. Whatever tho, unless some people think it'd be worth having, I'm not gonna start it because the XMarks calendar would handle it just fine, although not specifcally geared for it.

Sure, why not? Just remember that the Irish regiments usually only had kilted pipers. But I don't see why someone couldn't wear an Irish tartan, saffron, etc. kilt for an Irish regimental day. Someone with a Welsh, Cornish or Manx tartan could wear their kilt for specific days as well.

For my personal kilt calendar would certainly add the birthdays of my grandfathers and great grandfathers with Scottish blood and their Scottish wives...and great great aunts and uncles.

I know it isn't of any importance to most Celts, but the day Hank created this forum is an important date to all of us here. Maybe we should also have an XMARKS day. Forgive me if I can't remember the exact date, I came on aboard sometime a few months later and althoughI've seen the date in several threads here, I suffer from C.R.S.(Can't Remember Sh#%) syndrome.

Again, why not! Although it wouldn't mean anything to those outside our little group, it certainly could be put on the list. Like you though, I don't know what the date is. It would be a perfect day for those who have ordered the XMarks Tartan.

Why Kilts & Pipe Bands @ St. Pat's parade
As long as I can remember I have seen Pipe bands & Kilts @ St. Patrick's Day parades. Having lived in Scotland and being the stupid git american tha asked, while visiting in Ireland, "Where can I find a kiltmaker ?" And to be immediately laughed at. "Silly Americans. Kilts are Scottish." was the reply by shopkeepers. I know kilts are Scottish, but at the time I thought they were Irish too. I've tried to find out what the connection is. When in Scotland we celebrated St. Andrew's Day by wearing our kilts.
St. Pat's Day in Ireland up until the late 1990's was a holy day. A day to go to Mass. Then the Irish figured out they could make some money from having Americans celebrate St. Pat's in Ireland. Then kiltmakers, located in Scotland, found a market for "Irish Kilts" and started producing tartans per county. I personally know a gentleman, from when I lived in Edinburgh, that grew up in Northern Ireland, that told me that he had worn a kilt as a boy. It wasn't like the Scottish kilt with a tartan. His was a specific tweed. Anyway back to my painstaking question. Why tartan kilts from Scottish clans on St. Patrick's Day.

While i know we have a great Calendar on XmarksI wanted to keep track of these Kilted dates and others that might come up without being buried in all the Kilt Nights etc. that are posted. Since I use Google Calendar I put them their own calendar. In case anyone is interested it can be viewed here:
Kilted Days Calendar
If you use Google Calendar there is a link in the lower right to subscribe.
If anyone has yearly "Kilted" dates they think should be added please PM and I will add them.
