			Staghorn handle sgian dubh.

I need a daywear sgian dubh. All of the prices I've seen on them are ridiculous. Anybody know a good supplier of inexpensive ones?
I don't care if it will hold an edge, or even if the horn is imitation.

I've also got a cheap sgian dubh that I'm thinking about pulling the blade from, and making a handle from deer anter. All I need is some antler, preferably with the coronet. Anybody ever try such a project?

					Bob,
I have a good supply of staghorn sgians dubh on hand right now. Some imitation, some the real thing. Prices for the imitation start at $39.95. Prices for the real horn begin at $56. If you are interested in getting one, call me at (828)524-7472.

Is there a website where I can look at them?

Sorry, that happened last time I tried to post a number, too. I forgot to disable the smileys. That would be 828-524-7472.

You can view them on line here:
 http://giftshop.scottishtartans.org/blackknife.html

They are actually listed a bit cheaper on the web site, I just noticed. We have had to raise our prices due to a price increase from the manufacturer slightly. But I haven't had time to update that on the site. So order on line, save a few bucks! :-)

Thanks, Matt. Now that I look, I think I like the "wooden" handle knives better than staghorn.
If I were looking for another dress sgian dubh I'd grab one of those pewter handle ones in a heartbeat. That's nice looking.

Several years ago, my daughter bought a really fab sgian dubh when we were in Scotland. When it's stuck in your kilt hose, it looks like a carved stag horn sgian dubh. But, it's really just a carved horn with no metal blade. The other end of the horn is carved into a flat, blunt "blade" that holds the thing in your kilt hose. What I really like about it is that it's _light_. Every other sgian dubh I've tried is _heavy_ and tends to drag your kilt hose down on a long parade march, even if your flashes are cinched up tight.
I can't persuade her to part with it (for obvious reasons!!). If I'd been a piper at the time, I would have bought one, too. But, alas, to my regret, I didn't and now wish I had. Anyone know where I can buy one??

					Greetings, Barb!
You might try searching on the 'net under "knife making supplies". Many of the suppliers I've seen carry various horn (and synthetic horn) pieces for making handles.

Perhaps a "handle piece" for a larger knife might grind/sand down to a size/shape that would work for you? The material itself isn't that difficult to work with... And it's relatively inexpensive.

 Just a thought.

I don't know where you can buy one, but Texas Knifemaking Supply or Crazycrow would probably have the materials to make one. I made a similar one from hardwood with a clear plastic blade to wear at the MD Rennfaire (they don't allow real weapons).
