Tomorrow is our trip out to the Flat Holm Island in the Bristol Channel. Unfortunately I have had to make a decision of not wearing any of my two Cilts. We have been told to wear really old clothing as there are numerous large gull colonies on the Island and we will get loads of droppings on us. I really don't fancy getting any of the cilts stained for the sake of it. Must buy more Cilts (which in fact I am doing next week ... 'Jones' tartan). My blue mckay is an old cilt and has been really worn walking up in the hills and has had many wettings, but I still don't fancy getting it stained for the sake of it when I know its liable too. I also don't have a long enough waterproof to cover it either. Still, its only for a few hours. When we get back were all going to a friends house for some grub and beer. I will get changed back into my cilt by then though.

Could always get yourself one of the cheapies for such activities... or a sturdy utility kilt. There are numerous stories of the utlity type kilts withstanding the riggors of arduous expeditions.

for activities such as that a HAZ-MAT suit would be more appropriate!!!

One question: do they NOT provide rain ponchos or something similar to prevent 'accidental' gull splatterings (I still say them suckers aim for un-suspecting humans for target practice).


over this way you can get them for <$5 and they are big enough to cover 90% of your body & garments & are inexpensive enough to be tossed afterwards... (a large garbage bag can be used for the same purpose in a pinch...)

A proper kilt will more than stand up to such ravages.

Last year on a visit to Gloucester a seagull scored a direct hit, and did no harm at all to my best kilt.

Rinsed out with cold water.

The seagull had I think been trained by the lady-she denies it, but she would.

I find it interesting how members of this board seem worried that their kilt will come to harm, when it is a garment designed for rugged outdoor wear in all weathers. Over the years mine have encountered anything that they can meet-from gun oil, through whatever they might encounter when backpacking-and so on: without my ever having one harmed.

OK I;d not wear one for decorating-but that says more for skill with a paintbrush than anything else!

Thanks guys for your comments. Hopefully we shall have a good day. Some friends of ours went last year and they also reckon you come back plastered with seagull droppings. James post got me considering a bit but I'm going wear my old jeans. My wife thinks if I wore my Blue Mackay cilt. it will come back a dress tartan :rolleyes: .

best way to deal with large gull colonies is a .410 with bird shot. They don't like that much.

Oh, and very important word of advice:

don't walk near the gulls with food in your hand. I've seen gulls dive-bomb people trying to get their food. Not a fun experience at all.
