Yes, it is. What I meant was, if you see any regional/ethnic clothing, it is likely to be southwestern in nature. What I saw mostly was typical American clothing, what you would see in any city or town in the US.

I really don't think the kilt would be a big deal there. In all honesty, I haven't been anyplace in the US where the kilt was a big deal.

In all honesty, I haven't been anyplace in the US where the kilt was a big deal.

I heard that in small towns it can be quite a shock and you get crowds of angry people telling you to get out of their town.

Well....okay....maybe I didn't hear a story like that, maybe it's just my worst nightmare.

But someone did say that small town America wasn't ready for this and by the way I didn't ever get the mean "nice skirt" comment thrown at me until I was in Flagstaff.

Small town Americas ready for it, they've just not seen it yet. I'm kilted almost full time here in North Ga. ( the heart of redneck territory ), and frequently work in places that bring the movie Deliverance to mind. All with no problems.

I don't Santa Fe will notice.

Respectfully, I think you need to stop fretting so much. I live in one of the most conservative small towns in what is probably the most conservative state in the union - Idaho. I have had virtually no bad encounters. I have had a few gawks and some teen age titters when I pass - but if you're not willing to put up with a bit of of that - this may not be the garment for you. On the other hand, I have had loads of positive comments - some almost gushing - from all kinds of people - young folks, old folks, kids - you name it.

In the end I think your going to have to go out there and have your own unique experiences in a kilt and decide if this is a path you want to persue or not.

I don't think Santa Fe counts as "small town America"- it is the capitol of the state, after all (highest in the country at over 7,000 feet amsl). by the way, my experiences wearing kilts in the Rockies has been that if people don't understand or approve of what you're doing but it's not hurting anyone, they ignore it 'cuz it's none of their business. On the other hand, you'll probably get accosted by *everyone* that has even a shred of Scottish blood in them, or thought about wearing one, or wants to date someone who wears one: be prepared to spend a good bit of time chatting with passersby.

Bryan...try it in Durango sometime-when the weather cools abit, perhaps...

Umm....what's up with Bisbee? It sounds like a fun place!!

Bisbee is a small copper mining town about 20 miles from Sierra Vista in the Mule Mountains. The old part of town has an alpine feel with Victorian Buildings lining a narrow winding street up the canyon. Kind of artsy with excellent restaurants, bars, and coffee houses. It is the kind of place that you can walk around for a day and only go about 200 yards and not see everything. I'm not a big shopper so I usually sit and drink an iced coffee and watch people. Some wild kilt sightings but not a tartan yet. Historically it was the largest town between Kansas City (I think) and San Francisco by rail. I've got a cabin near Bisbee just north of the tunnel through the mountain, I go there for relaxation when I need to decompress. I'll post some pics sometime. O'Neille
