Maybe the only reference they have to seeing someone in a kilt is Sean C.

    Cheers! Bill

I think most folks associate kilts with pipers and they see pipers on St. Patricks Day, so you can do the math.

No disrespect intended to our Cymric brethren here, but I'm amazed that people in this country even know that Wales exists most of the time. Considering the fact that statistically most Americans can't even locate Europe on a map of the world, it makes me wonder where these people got the idea to ask me if I was Welsh because I'm wearing a kilt.

Add that to my very Germanic 6'5", blonde haired, blue eyed, fair skinned frame, and I become baffled by the question.

If there was anyone who looked decidedly non-Welsh, it's me.
We have been trying to attain a higher profile in the world!

The EU managed to wipe Wales off the map in one of their publications last year when a map of the EU had an extra wide expanse of Irish Sea!

But we do have the Cilt (Welsh spelling) which is gradually becoming more known and Welsh tartans too. And there are many people of Welsh descent in the USA but I am not sure, despite that, that Kilts (or Cilts) would be that associated in American minds with Wales.

Naturally we would take it as a compliment

Sounds like cultural as well as geographical lessons are called for though!

My father was Welsh and I have to say I got the milk-pale skin, freckles, and curls from him! His last name was Vaughan.
