Oh man, what a dream location strategically, you can see the advancing armies miles away! (*Officer thinking*)
In Finland we have forest EVERYWHERE so all our castles are built on river islands...

Hmmmm. Since I've seen the fantastic pictures of the castle and would love to visit AND seen the pic of the beautiful tartan I guess that gives me enough connection to the tartan to put it on my list

Great pics again Alex. As a Hume myself it makes me very nostalgic. By the way, there's a story attatched to that well. King James 1V of Scotland always wore a heavy metal chain around his waist as penance, and he was killed at the nearby battle of Flodden in 1513. Legend has it that (for some reason) his body was found and taken to Hume Castle where is was dropped down the well. Many centuries later during excavations of the well, a skeleton was found - and it had a rusty old chain around it's waist !

Reason: I got the Battle of Flodden mixed up with the Battle of Bannockburn (wishfull thinking !)
The Kilt is my delight !

That's really interesting AckZel. One of the theories for the name Hume is that it comes from the old Danish word Hulme, which means 'RIVER ISLAND' !
However, it is almost certainly from the old Scots Gaelic for 'of the Cave', which was the designation of a cadet branch of the MacDuff Earls of Fife, who were known to have been granted lands in this part of Scotland by King Malcolm 111 after his defeat of Macbeth in 1054.
The Kilt is my delight !

Thanks for the story about the well, Freddie.
I also posted some pics of Flodden field in this thread:-

Etal castle also played a significant part in the Flodden story and is on my to do list now that we are at last getting some summer weather. Watch this space.
