I view kilts as not simply as a male freedom or the last great frontier for men but as a cultural garment that is both beautiful and historicaly important.
I keep hitting the backspace... My wish is not to insult anyone but everything I type seems to come out with a bit of an edge. I'll leave this topic as it seems to have offended me on some level.

Yep - that's just how I feel too!
I've copied part of a response from a woman and turned it on its head :
"In short, yes I know they are traditionally a womens garment, but it's just not an issue for a man like me who's being wearing all kinds of other women's clothes besides skirts." Brings a whole different set of feelings and reactions, don't it?

You've done well with this thread. Several members of this forum have contacted me about starting a pool on how long it would take for the thread to get rubbed out. It's a good thing we didn't start a pool, I would have lost, a page or two back.
It does seem that it is approaching critical mass, however, so let's try to keep a simple fact in mind. That fact being there is no definitive answer to this issue. People are going to have different opinions about the issue, as a result. Are you willing to allow others to hold their own opinion on this topic, or are you going to force your own opinion on them?

KK, I think you've misunderstood the intent behind that sentence. The statement was simply making clear that this is not a forum for the discussion of men in skirts, dresses or other generally accepted women's clothing. Which is supported by the very next sentence in that statement -
If you want to know more about kilts then you have come to the right place!
We will do well to notice and remember this clearly does not make gender distinctions, it merely declares this is a forum for all people to learn about kilts.
Try to remember you are all simply sharing opinions with one another. (Remember what you learned about opinions - they're like ars.... errrr, navels, because everyone has one.) Everyone is entitled to his or her opinion on this topic and trying to force-feed your opinion to another is not going to accomplish anything.
Be aware there's been a red flag waving over the top of this one from the get-go, so don't be too terribly surprised if it suddenly disappears.

I've tried to be nice this time. I think, that the reason there are strong feelings on this topic, is that there is a deep set fear among a lot of us, that if women begin to generally adopt the kilt as a standard form of women's clothing, then those few of us who wear it will, indeed, in the eyes of non-kilt wearers, become "men wearing women's clothes", no matter what tradition says.

I understand some don't like women "stealing" "our" kilt, but just look at it this way...
Very few women will ever buy a traditional mens kilt...the very few who really like the quality, pleats, straps, swing, etc...let them enjoy the kilt.
This comes up every now and then and some get upset about it, but how often do we see...and will ever see...a lassie wear a traditional? Hardly ever!
So it's basicly not an issue....chill pill time

I think you raise a good point here.
However, the individuals that already think you are wearing women's clothing are always going to think you are wearing women's clothing, whether the woman with you is in a kilt or no. There's not going to be any change to that mind-set, that I can see. We can't fix stupid, no matter how hard we try.
And please remember the above is nothing more than my own opinion, which all are free to agree or disagree with, as they choose.

Well first of all I agree with mike in that we all have our own opinions and we hardly have a shot of changing eachothers over a forum So as I stated before, these are all my personal beliefs and feelings towards the matter.

Though I'm sure many don't want to lose the kilt to the "womens side" of fashion that's not really why I stand where I do, I personally believe any sex wearing the others clothing is wrong.
But anyway I'm really getting off what I was trying to say here (dont you just hate that? )
My main point was, you said that only a select few women wear them, and I just wanted to point out that in the begining, a select few women wore mens cut trousers, and now look how many women are walking around in pants (which I'm fine with if they're womens cut). So pretty much I was just pointing out that if there are men on this forum who don't want women to wear kilts because of that reason then they do have a "standing" if you will

Can't we all just get along? No, seriously, folks, I like the way the discussion has been going. Although this is obviously a question that people feel very strongly about, I think that to this point we've all managed to convey our feelings without diverting into flame wars. I've been eyeing this thread, and wondering when it would disappear! More power to the good folk here, and how we're sharing our opinions . . . without a lockdown!
Without going into the "kilt vice kilted skirt" issue (which Matt and Nanook have addressed), "Why would a woman want to wear a kilt?" Well, I think I might know. I have flabbergasted women with the pleating in a kilt. One woman asked me (really quite nicely) why I was wearing a "skirt." (She was not being derogatory, she just didn't know it was a kilt.) I sat on a park bench and spread my legs, with the sporran draping down to hold the aprons in place (I'm nae a flasher, laddies!). "That's why," says I. It (the kilt) is not only wicked pretty, but also an ENTIRELY FUNCTIONAL PIECE OF CLOTHING.
"Oh," said the lady. "I don't own a skirt that has that much legroom."
All the best,
Kid Cossack

I'm new to the forum and still learning the levels of tolerance practiced by the moderators here so pardon me for sounding a bit noobish. But in my opinion, this thread has been amazing. No attacking. No flaming. No cussing. But many opinions with wonderful ideas and beliefs. I personally see no reason for it to get Penalized. This thread has obviously grasped the attention of the board with a current critical topic that is important to those in the kilt-loving community. I would hope that letting it continue is more beneficial to the forum than killing it.
