It's a great tartan and makes up a beautiful kilt. But also you might want to know that LL Bean sells a shirt in that tartan, cotton button down collar, and when I wear it I get great comments. Most people have no clue that it's a bona fide tartan but they like it and so it's a conversation starter.

My wife and I have been in the USCG Auxiliary for years and find the comradship to be exceptional. No doubt you will too. Best regards, Chaplain...

This is great news. Thank you chaplin Harris for posting it. I was considering joining the USCG Auxillary so that I could join the USCG Pipe Band membership so that I could get a kilt from Alexis Malcolm, who is the official maker of the USCG Pipe Band kilts.

A Sport Kilt would of course not be in the same league as an Alexis Malcolm, but it would be several (hundred) dollars less. I'm going to look into this. The USCG is such a great organization. Even though one may wear just about any tartan one wishes, I like to get something assosiated with something I like or care about.

Good move. Are you planning a uniform with the kilt? Seems like there's a kilt jacket--I think--for the US Coast Guard pipe band. Might look really good if it's not against regulations.

Went to the Sport Kilt site but the USCG tartan is not up yet. E-mailed them to see what was up and got this reply:

Hi Matt,
We're making the USCG tartan right now, and we expect to have it in our hands by the end of this month, and kilts ready to go in early May, so you may want to check back with us then. Glad to hear the Loch Ness is a hit!!

One of my fiance's best friend's has been serving with the USCG for a few years now and is about to get sent off to Bahrain.
I think he may like a USCG kilt as a gift.

I might wear get a jacket, not sure yet. I am only an auxiliarist which in layman terms could best be described as a volunteer force that is the lowest on the totem pole. I noticed most of the auxiliarist in our local flotilla is older than I am, that made me think, I enjoy the water, boating and most things nautical. I like the fact they are busy with public education, water safety, patrols for water safety, vessel safety checks, facility checks (vessel related, e.g. bridges, marina), that they help with keeping ATON's in check (water way signals, buoys) and that they support the USCG when needed. If you fit or like these kinds of things, I would encourage anyone interested to get involved. This is not a signing up to go off somewhere, this is a local force that is voluntary and you work only as much time as you can give.

I haven't been on a patrol yet, but I am looking forward to it. I'm really a point person for public education. I enjoy teaching kids about water safety the most.
