At my age some days I think that I AM King Pellinore...or is that Senor Quixote? Chasing the questing beast is my life long pleasure, but I hope to never catch him.
The travels through the mountains were a blessing. I found a wonderful pub in Hendersonville, NC with food that was PERFECT. Then a long drive up the Parkway to Craggy Bottom where it was snowing, 27 degrees F., and all was ice. Incredible color still up to 3000 ft, but I bet it will be gone this week. Above that, all was an icy farieland of beauty. Upon coming back off the mountain we walked around downton Asheville for a few hours where we ventured into Barley's (my review, not a pub and the food greatly lacking) then on to Jack of the Wood, a NICE pub, great staff, good selection, but had already eaten. Afterward, we drove to Sylva and walked some more in the late hours. The hills and the weather between Asheville and Sylva CAN be hazardous when icy and snowing...mostly from the drivers from further south. Woke early today and drove on to Franklin where we found the Tartan Museum crew enjoying delicious coffee a few doors down...a GREAT crew who then treated me to a two hour overview of all things Scottish. The best two bucks I have spent in a long time. WELL worth the stopover and in a very nice location. leaving out around noon, we then drove across the top of GA, returning through Hiawassee. Asheville may not be perfect, but 99.9% isn't bad!!
