Overheard - Take two

Sunday night I was playing 18thC music at Strawbery Banke Museum in Portsmouth and I saw a kilted staff member walking across the grounds. Of course, I had to go speak to him and I asked if there was a special occasion or if he just was kilted just because. The answer was the latter As he approached me, someone from outside of my vision said something to him that I didn't hear. His answer to that person was, with a big smile, "Oh your just jealous!" I hollered out, "Well I certainly am, because I'm not wearing mine". It was 1766 and I was dressed accordingly. Even though they were short they were still p*nts. We had a great conversation about kilts and fashion and such. It sort of made my night.

I know! I was at a party in Colonial Williamsburg with a bunch of employees. And what do I see but a man in Black Watch. Unfortunately I didn't get much a chance to talk to him, but I was so mad, because a friend had tried to get me to come in a kilt, but I'd demurred, because I get tired of being mistaken for an employee myself, just because I'm not in pants.

Yes, its funny how you run into other kilted gents when you aren't wearing yours.
Now that I wear kilts almost every day I hear the other side of this - I've lost count of the number of people whom I've met at functions who have said they would have worn their kilts if they'd known they wouldn't be the only one kilted.

When my family and I go to Williamsburg we get mistaken for the employees too, but usually only to ask where the bathrooms are. We haven't been for a few years, but when we did go every year we were asked to go in 18th century costume. Of course we ladies recognized as being "with the drunk guys in the booth" and we had to explain that that was them perfectly sober.
