I know lots of folks have replied in the affirmative, but I felt the need to still put in my two cents.
As a current member of the US Army, and veteran of two tours in Iraq (total of 22 months) I would be deeply honored if you were to wear a military kilt in memory not only of your military ancestors, but of those who have fought and died to give you the right to wear what you want.
Personally, before I got my first kilt (ACU pattern Sport Kilt), I used to wear a fly plaid in my family tartan to the highland games. On the fly plaid, I wear my service ribbons from Iraq, my father's ribbons from Vietnam, my father-in-laws ribbons from Korea, and my grandfather's ribbons from WWII.
So wearing these items as long as it's understood they are in memorial, with me as a veteran is ok.

Hate to rain on anyone's parade... I think you'd be far better off NOT wearing a specific military tartan, and opting for the 79th NY tartan or the Federal Memorial tartan. Nothing personal, but it makes me cringe to see someone wearing something "military" they aren't entitled to. Regimental ties, military kilts, medals... these things are part of a noble tradition, not costumes. They need to be treated with respect.

I'm just back from an evening of voting and socializing at the American Legion, I paid my dues for both the legion (12 years) and the legion riders (founding member). Wear any tartan you wish as long as you have respect for it and can justify it personally. If you have to ask permission to wear it then you might want to consider a different tartan.

To the best of my knowledge, the service tartans are not part of any regulation uniform, and thus I again say wear them to the honor of those that are serving and have served their country!

Take one of our honored members for instance. Ron wears my beloved Leatherneck tartan to honor his brother, if my memory serves. And my heart is lifted when I see him do it. Sure, I don't wear the Army's or the Navy's tartan, but one can only have so many kilts, and there are too many tartans on my wish list already. Oh, and I can call it "my" tartan because I served in the Corps for over 30 years and retired a Master Gunnery Sergeant.

I am with Master Guns on this wear what ever you want I just got the Navy Tartan from Rocky (it is an awsome kilt go Rocky) but if I wanted to get a leather neck or Army why shouldn't I or anybody else.
So you have a Master Gunnery Sergeant USMC and a Navy Chief telling wear what ever you want that should take care of it and if anybody ever says anything send them our way

Thanks guys for writing and responding to this link. I have very strong family roots to the Navy (through my grandfather who was a Pearl Harbor survivor and retired Admiral) and the Marines (my father served two tours in Vietnam and I was named after his best friend who lost his life in RVN). I have been considering the chance to honor my family's military heritage with a kilt in one/or both of these tartans. I'm still wrestling with the idea if it is acceptable or not for me to wear them; however, your comments have given me a lot to consider and think about. Thank you.

Wear them, dammit! The people who would discourage you are those who know that they themselves are unfit to wear them. Don't let those dogs-in-the-manger decide what you shall do!

    Just an idea,

Enlist - do three years active- then you can wear the kilt without any problem. Just kidding.
