any experience with MyTartan.com?
I'd like to see a report or review if anyone here has ordered from MyTartan.com. They're offering some polyester/wool blend tartans for about $US80, generally the same price as SWK standard but more design choices. They don't describe the weight of the fabric or what percentage is plastic, what percentage wool, but something tells me it's probably a little heavier than acrylic.

It looks like their 5 Yard Wool Kilts are just from Scotweb.com They even have the same paragraph describing the 5yard kilt as Scotweb.
As for the "Kilts top Sellers" I would assume that these are the gold Bros kilts that many other online merchants sell as well. Decent kilts, but don't let the "Designed In Scotland" tag trick you into thinking that it was "made" in scotland.
Nice find though. it's always nice to have more options.
Cheers!

I don't know if they're connected with the Gold Brothers...I looked through several pages of the site for a clue to this. I would point out that the term "Scottish Made" does appear frequently rather than that ominous "Designed in Scotland" tag. Probably one or more of our members living in or about Galashiels could give us some insight...till then, I wouldn't write them off as a branch of the "Tartan Tat Brigade".

WOW! I never heard of the Gold Brothers, but since they were mentioned in both responses I thought I'd search for them on XMarks. I got lots of hits with lots of innuendo, but I don't really understand who they are, what they do or represent, and how they (might) relate to MyTartan.com.

I purchased an Argyll and waistcoat from MyTartan.com's E-Bay store. They were very easy to work with, and they went out of their way (they actually spent more on shipping than they charged me) to make sure that everything was delivered by the date I'd specified I needed it. The jacket aand waistcoat were MADE IN SCOTLAND, and they are 100% wool. I can't vouch for their kilts, but the items I ordered are good quality and fit very well.
I hope this helps.

Yes, that helps a lot, CJ. I didn't know that they had auctions--their link came up on a Google search. I might get a better deal on eBay so I think I'll stroll over there.
I'm not wealthy by any means, but I think it might be worth investing $80 plus S/H to see what they're offering. If I do, I'll be sure to report my experience to the forum.

I just looked at their site. They have a mix of both Scottish made items and Pakistan / China made items. All of the "39.99 kilts" are the ones wholesaled by the Gold Borthers to smaller companies. This doesn't make them a "Gold Brother" company, but means that they buy from the GB at WHOLESALE.
Basically... look at the price. If it's too good to be true, it is probably made in Pakistan or China. If it's in the "ballpark" of other companies, then it's probably made in Scotland.

I am Raymond Hamilton, www.mytartan.com We have a factory in Galashiels in the Scottish Borders. We are a wholesaler and retailer we are part of HAMILTON PRODUCTS,weare not connected with anyone else. We do sell 8 yard poly/vicose kilts. The reason is simple, I think everyone should have the chance to wear a kilt whether it be £500 or £40. We have complete scottish made outfits for £300 this includes the jacket as well, our customers can't afford to pay £800 for their national dress. My opinion is that Lochcarron and other manufacturers of Tartan material have had it to good to long. They are ripping off their own countryman. The shops in Edinburgh and other High Street locations get the same material and the same kilt maker. I sell this 8 yard wool kilt for £200, they sell fir £350. We need a cheap kilt for the poor people who only want to wear the kilt with pride. Raymond Hamilton

That's cool. Welcome to Xmarksthescot.com by the way. I wouldn't go as far to say that kilt makers that charge that much are "Ripping off their own countrymen" but we're all entitled to our own opinions. As you know I'm sure there is a lot that goes into a handsewn kilt.
A question that I have though is, if you are manufacturing the $40 kilts and making them yourselves, why is it that most of your designs are the standard tartans that you can find at most other places that offer them for the same price? I would love to see some new tartans to choose from rather than the standard; MacKenzie, Gordon, Stewart, and Heritage of Scotland. Don't get me wrong I love these tartans but everyone has them.
If you have the ability to make other tartans I would definitely consider them. Now there are more tartans that come from Gold Bros ( I know you said that you weren't affiliated and that's cool) but if you look at thefrugalcorner.com website they have about 35 different tartans to choose from. If someone could manufacture different tartans instead of the common ones, I'm sure they would sell like hotcakes.
If you could take a picture of the tag inside the kilt and post it too that'd be great. I'd love to see the designer tag.
Anyways, I've babbled on long enough, welcome to Xmarks again, and I hope we hear more from you.

Hey!! Nice! A quick and effective response! I may have to patronize you in the future. Welcome.
