Just a quick comment on "correct size" it all really depends on the size of the head. Some have small, delicate skulls, and the 9 1/2 " (24 cm) look fine. For those of us with larger (not fatter) heads, going up to the larger sizes keeps the look in proportion. ith:

I usually wear either a Military issue black Balmoral (Plain, not diced) or the Blue Bonnet Diane made me.
And, just for reference, she's now officially taking orders again. (She'll be updating the blog shortly.)

I have one of those I picked up while working in Bulgaria a few years back and it is BY FAR the warmest hat I have ever worn. I still have it but I can only wear it on the coldest of days because it is so warm. Most cold days I just wear a watch cap.

Indeed!
I tend to be working outdoors at 2 or 3 in the morning, with a full nor'eastern blast coming full force off Mt Baker or out of the Fraser Valley from across the border during the winter, and unfortunately my ol' wool watch cap just won't cut it.....my ears feel like they'll drop right off!
I'm looking forward to feeling that warm fur covering my ears

Besides my standard black balmoral I also wear any of several flat country caps in either appropriate tartan or tweed, depending on the accompanying attire. I also have several colored balmorals (including jacobite blue) and a dark green Irish caubeen that were handmade by ramscraig and bought off ebay at a reasonable price(for custom made custom sized all wool caps). There is a short wait of a couple weeks plus cross ocean shipping time but it isn't too long.

Google "P&J Haggart,Aberfeldy" go to their hat section(ignore most of their hat labels!)find their "Bugatti" cap. I cannot speak too highly of this bit of kit. We use them in the winter on the hill and without being silly, they have saved some tricky situations with preventing heat loss etc. more than a few times.

All these pictures in the snow have me thinking just one thing: how do you keep your ears warm? That is always one of the first places the cold seems to affect me.

Me, too. So I tend to stay inside and drink a lot of scotch.
