I have a kilt on order from Matt in this Tartan. The more I look and learn the more interested in Tartans that aren't mainstream I get. That being said, I like to wear a plaid with my kilt especially this time of year, when the weather co-operates. Finding and buying extra yardage for a plaid can be an exspensive undertaking, sometimes costing more than the kilt. Most shops on the internet advertise Fly plaids, but not "Long" plaids. I spoted 4yards, double wide of County Cavan on e-bay at clantartanplaid. (Sadly enough, they seam to have disapeared.) With the dollar to Pound exchange favorable, I was able to pick it up shiped to me for $140.00.
Now I had 12ft plus two extra inches by 55 1/2" of material. I cut 50" off for a Fly plaid. Then cut a little over 2 1/2" of each side of the width. That gave me a 50" square. I fringed 1" around.
With the remaining 8 ft, I did a 1" fringe on each of the long sides. There both in my closet waiting for the kilt to show up.
I may add more fringe to the Fly plaid, I wanted to stay in historical step with the kilt so I only used the 1" on the Long plaid, but since a Fly plaid is a more recent invention, I may take the time to finish it with the customary fringe and pearl.
Bottom line is that I got both plaids in 13oz wool for what a Fly plaid alone would have cost me.
