    Question Sporrans

ith: I am wondering if there is a guide on sizing of a sporran. I am a big guy, 6'2" and 260 lbs, and it seems that some sporrans which look normal to some people would appear to be small on me.. to be honest, I am ignorent on the proper wear of a sporran. I have gathered from reading the forums, the different styles and when they are to be worn, but my question is.. proper wearing of a sporran, and maybe some tips for a big guy to wear it properly.
I had picked up a sporran from SWK, and its the nylon model, something I felt would work in a casual setting... but something seems amiss.. it doesn't feel right.. and from experience.. if its worn right, it will feel right..
I appreciate any and all assistance on my questions, and I know with those onboard here, I will get the best advice possible. Thank You

I'm a bit bigger than you, and wear the SWK Nightstalker sporran regularly. It's a great size and I love the extra pockets. IMHO proper placement is the most important feature. I try to wear the sporran about one hand width below the belt. More than that and it becomes uncomfortable.

You're about my size, and while I don't have a kilt that is Sporran friendly, you may want to try sporran hangars instead of a belt. In my minds eye, I think I would look better with that option instead of a belt.

Big guy here too. I found Native Earth bags at a Ren Faire and now have two of their 9"x9" #6 Strap Bags that I use as large sporrans.

    http://www.nativearth.net/bag.html

Top quality and theres a wide back loop for a sporran strap. Works great for carrying extra gear.

And it looks more in proportion for a big guy. Comes with a strap so you can also use it as a possibles bag.

I bought a brown and a black to have color versatility.

Maybe Big Mikey will chime in here. Take a look at Thorfinn Sporrans. His standard sporrans are very large but if needed he can enlarge the sporran a bit. Not saying it should be done, but they can double as a bonnet alternative in a pinch

For a well made and reasonable priced option I would suggest looking into any of the Buzz Kidder sporrans. They are bigger (wider) than most other standard sporrans , are made of supple and thick leather, and best of all are about $60. A number of XMTS sponsors carry them.

I highly recommend Xmarks' original sporran maker, Freelander Sporrans. A number of folks here are members of "Clan Freelander".

Would it be a complete discussion on over-sized sporrans if Big Mikey didn't chime in?

It wasn't my idea to have my sporran "made to size". Turpin suggested it and I readily agreed. The sporran he made me is about 30% bigger than his usual model. It hangs great and looks fantastic. AND with his unique "Snap Flap" option, it is very versatile. Definitely look at his website and here is mine in action. BTW, I'm 6'2" and 320 lbs.

I also have a Thorfin sporran, although it is Turpin's standard model. I am extremely pleased with it. Turpin will work with you to meet any special needs or requests you have. I strongly recommend Turpin's sporrans

I'm 6'1" and 250lbs and I wear normal sporrans. Although if you want a larger sporran, check out Thorfinn sporrans or Freelander.
