The undergrad I went to is a Lutheran university with a very German/Nordic population group. I was trying to describe the northern European architectural style of the campus to a friend of mine from home, and I said, "Well, it's very Scandinavian." He responds: "Oh the country where England sent all its prisoners!?" (Australia) All I could do was shake my head.

When I started High School I sat next to a kid from Austria who's family had just emigrated to Canada. The girl seated on the other side of him asked him where he was originally from. "Austria." he replied. She then proceeded to ask him if he'd ever seen any kangaroos. He started to laugh, and I told her they didn't have any kangaroos in the Alps. She still didn't get it!

My younger sister studied in England for a semester in college. When she and the other US students were planning spring break trips, one of them suggested that they go somewhere close like Tahiti. My sister (who knows exactly were Tahiti is) said that that was really far to travel, the girl replied that it's right off the coast of France.
My only hope is that the girl didn't share her geographic knowledge with any Brits

P.S. If anyone is wondering, my sister went scuba diving in the Red Sea. I was extremely jealous.

I started to click on a few comments to multi-quote them, but there are just too many. I've always thought Americans were the most provincial people in the world. Don't need to know geography, because USA=Universe. When I was travelling in Europe I recall overhearing one American tourist say to his wife, "Honey, France would be really nice if it weren't for all these foreigners."
