New source for canvas!!!

This would also solve my allergy problem to the goat canvas as discussed in a previous thread. I'll have to get some of this material for my upcoming projects.

Vorpallemur's analysis of the purpose of the hair is spot on. I think, though, that its absence wouldn't really matter too much for kilts, because the place you want the most vertical stability is in the back in the pleats, and you pleat the canvas across the back, which imparts a flexibility horizontally but a stiffness vertically.

Thinking about the role of hair reminds me that, a number of years ago, I got a bolt of "hair canvas" that had little nylon filaments in place of the hair.

I think it is important in the aprons, though. The hair canvas keeps the fabric from making sharp folds when bending. I think the Wizard calls it puckering. I have noticed that wool kilt fabric does have a little bit of the same quality, but not quite like the hair canvas. My kilt doesn't have the pleats cut out, so the eight-hundred layers of wool fabric does kind of keep the top of the kilt around the back from getting out of shape; it's just too thick around the belt area.

I have (or had) a suit I got since my new job three years ago that must have had that canvas in it. It was forever sprouting stiff nylon threads on the front that would catch my hand as I brushed down the front. I don't recall if I threw the thing away or just moved it to the back of the closet, but I never wear it any more. It was a desperation purchase. Cheap but not frugal.

How do I know if the canvas I have is stiff enough, or if I should double it? It looks just like the picture in Barb's first post, and is thinner than I'd expect, but sturdy (much stiffer than any fusable interfacing I've seen). It appears to have no Horsehair in it, though. Might be goat or just synthetic. It will certainly do for a jacket front - does that make it suitable for a kilt?

I just received 3 yards of heavy Hymo from B. Black as per Barb's first post. It looks like really splendid material. I haven't gotten to the canvas installation stage of my current kilt project yet, but Hymo looks like it will serve the purpose very well.
