If you are spending a night or two in SF and at all are interested in fine Scotch Whisky, The Ritz Carlton Hotel just up the hill a ways from downtown is renowned for having the world's largest collection of single malt scotch whisky, most of it purchased in cask strength and imported by the owners, then bottled straight from the cask, and served straight from the bottle. They have a table in the bar with about 30 hand bottled bottles plus many more behind the bar and in a back room area, and the bartender in the bar is extremely knowledgeable about all the varieties available, their flavors, styles, and will do a phenomenal job of matching your desired taste with one or more of their stock. This is specialty chosen cask strength whisky (50-60% alcohol) compared to normally retail bottled (40-43% alcohol), and these casks are hand chosen as the cream of the crop of each specific batch of that particular run of whisky from that particular distiller, and are not blended, even with other casks of the same run, so they each have very distinctive and unique flavors that you will not find elsewhere on the market, certainly not in your run of the mill liquor store. Call the Ritz in advance to make sure the scotch bar will be open the night(s) you want to come by for a tasting. Be prepared for a bit of sticker shock---four of us (2 men, 2 women) each had three drinks of different whiskies and walked (stumbled) out of there for the one block uphill walk to our hotel after paying a bill of over $175 including tip.
PM if you need more details.

Also check out Muir Woods or Point Reyes. I really liked both of those places as well.
"A veteran, whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve, is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life." That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it." anon

Thank you all for the great tips. That Whiskey Tasting sounds very interesting, as do the Scottish Games. We'll have to see how are plans run. Thanks for the information.
