You and me both Alex. It's on my list. I have an excellent DVD set documenting scenic railroads and that is one of them. Beautiful countryside and very interesting railroad.
Nighthawk,
Is that the UP Excursion train in the last pic? What's pulling it? I have a video of a Challenger going cross country with that train.

Ridden both the Durango to Silverton and Cumbres & Toltec. By far the best one is the Cumbres & Toltec.

Check out my dad's YouTube channel. He has films that his dad shot, films that he himself has shot, and so much more. I'm a third gen railfan, working on turning my son into the fourth!

It's the ride of a lifetime. You forget the little things, though- like waking up to the sounds of all the mountain birds, the noise of the train crews putting together the train for the day, the smell of the pines with the mountain dew on them... I sometimes miss living there.

That was the UP 844 (or maybe 8444- they renumbered it recently, since the diesel with the same number was decomissioned- I'd have to look at the rest of my pics from that chase to tell you for sure.) It was a run to Cheyenne, Wyoming and back to denver. We like to drive up to Wyoming, have lunch and chase the train back to Denver. In the morning, you have the sun in your face, so that picture was taken heading South from Wyoming.
The best way to really experience the scenery of the C&TS (in my opinion) is to start out in Antonito, and ride into Chama. The light in the morning is best for seeing the volcanos on the Antonito side, and in the evening when you get to the Chama side, the light is great for the heavy forest scenery.

Back on Track
I went kilted to see the Santa Fe 3751 returning from Sandy Eggo last year, but after an afternoon of waiting I left for dinner, changed into jeans and returned to watch / listen to it leave Fullerton. CA a little after 9pm. The sound and sight was well worth the effort (and nobody could appreciate my kilt in the dark anyway - I di get several second looks from the afternoon trains - freights and passengers).
Kilted ON a train: riding the Surfliner to Oxnard for the Seaside Game later this year.
Now I'm thinking a ride on The Canadian, kilted on either the Winnipeg or Edmonton/Jasper days would be a hit and a hoot !

Thanks NightHawk - have ridden Penn to 30th St and enjoyed the memory. I went on the Regional service though because my Rail Pass didn't cover the Acela or the Metroliners.
