How much larger do the SKs run? My pants waist is 44 so that would put me in an XL, but I'm wondering how it would work now and if I get one if I should go for an L.

You pants waist and actual measurement will be different. I wear a 38 Jean but measure 45 inches

I would avoid SportKilts. They are too flimsy and too short, and the elastic in the back is just strange.
If you want something inexpensive that you can get rough with (and no, I am not refering to anyone on XMarks) you might try Frugal Corner.

My advice as a kilt wearer and a Highland Athlete is:
Find a well made tailored kilt that reflects your family heritage and or clan association and wear that for dress. Stay here--and that number will probably triple in a year or two
Then get a couple of Stillwater Economy, Sport Kilt or Frugal Corner options in a universal tartan (if they don't have yours) for the game playing. Our kilts get shreaded and covered with chalk and tacky. I'm partial to Stillwater Economy or Sport Kilts for games. SWK's are less expensive and they both take a beating.

I own two Frugal Corners, a lightweight and a heavyweight. Both are really well made. The lightweight type would be ideal for the heavy games.

I suppose it comes to who want to represent at the games. I say Menzies, but that's just my opinion.

I own all three brands, and I'd say that the Sport Kilt is the most suitable of the three for sports (big surprise, that), but then I don't actually take part in highland games, so what do I know? OTOH, Stillwater is the cheapest. None of those brands have MacDuff or Menzies, though.
Now, what do you know? It turns out that USA Kilts do their casual kilts in both MacDuff and Menzies! Those are also polyester based, and probably cost about the same as a Sport Kilt when you factor in that Sport Kilt charge extra for everything, including bigger sizes.

I am not pushing Sport Kilt (SK) over any other brand, however, I will say that they have tartan selection replent with choices. They have tartans form almost every state in America. As well as Armed Forces, Law Enforcement, and Fire Fighters. I am NOT saying that other brands lack such stock, just that SK had them were I found them fast. You don't need a clan tartan.
As a Mason (Brick Layer, stone worker, not FM) my next kilt will more than likely be a Utilikilt. They come in five basic patterns, and claim high durability. The Utilikilt is also fairly inexpensive and start under $200.
