    Calling ALL Cunninghams

Although I have been out and about with the camera taking photos of events held by other Scottish clans, I was disappointed that there was no Cunningham Clan gathering in my home country of Scotland during 2009. I did meet up with the California Commissioner for the long established Clan Cunningham Society of America on the Sunday of the Edinburgh gathering and she introduced me to two of the leading lights in Clan Cunningham USA, a relatively new organisation set up in 2002. There are also organisations known as Cunningham House and ClanCunningham.org. Steps are now in hand to identify and petition for the recognition of a clan Chieftain who would unite the various clan societies as a single Clan, bringing together all the social activities, genealogy, etc. of the various existing societies. I know there are several other Cunninghams on the forum and would urge all of you to suppoprt this initiative.

I think it would be great if we could get a clan chieftain established. Honestly I have not been very active with the Scottish community as of late but this sounds like a great thing for the clan. How would one go about "supporting the initiative?"

    Regards

Seems to me you have your work cut out for you. You just have to find the nearest heir-male of John Cunningham, 15th Earl of Glencairn....

Then add a grain of salt to that...

I believe they have someone who they believe to be a decendant of some sort.

here it is, after a few moments searching.

Robert William Bontine Cunninghame Graham of Gartmore is the eldest surviving descendent from the 12th Earl of Glencairn and Chief of Clan Cunningham. In 1796, his ancestor, Robert Cunninghame Graham of Gartmore, as eldest surviving son of Lady Margaret Cunninghame, eldest daughter of the 12th Chief, from her marriage to Nicol Graham of Gartmore, received the ancestral estate, undifferenced arms and name of Cunninghame upon the death of her nephew, the last Earl of Glencairn and Chief of Cunningham by entail of the 12th Earl. He bears the undifferenced arms of the Earls of Glencairn and Chiefs of Cunningham. His line of descent was chosen as heir by the lasts Chiefs and as such we clan members, associates and supporters request that he be recognized as our Chief of Cunningham.

He is also descended from Robert the Bruce, King of Scotland and Edward the I, King of England.

Clan Cunningham International will be fundraising for the cost of a professional opinion from Sir Crispin Agnew, to be followed by a Petition to the Lord Lyon for recognition of an heir to the Chieftaincy.

After a conversation with Leslie ( LA Woman) and Alex, and the enthusiasm shown, and also the initiative shown in her efforts, I have signed this on behalf my family, I will contact the remainder of the family down south and advise them like wise.
