Very nice budget tartan on ebay..$6.99 a yard!
Item # 370280770214
The seller is marketing this as "flannel" but to me it feels like 13 ounce kilting wool. The selvedge is good, though it does somewhat mess up the twill pattern of the stripes. Because of that it's not "real" kilting fabric. However, I would make a practice traditional kilt out of this stuff in a flash. This stuff may be wool/polyester, I dunno, but it is NICE. I bought four yards and am using it for a Great Kilt for Ren Faire.
It's no tartan that I recognize, but if you wanted a superior fabric at a **very** reasonable price to make that first handmade kilt, this would be a seriously good choice. Sew on this material before you dive into the $70 a yard stuff. I can't believe she's selling it for $6.99 a yard but there you go.
I will probably disassemble the great kilt someday, and will likely turn my four yards into a very nice tartan kilt.

Thanks, Alan! I was looking to pick up a copy of Barb's book and try my hand, but I was loth to spend a large sum on tartan for my first go. This is just about perfect!
Oh and it does say "poly wool", so I guess you're right in suggesting it's a wool/polyester blend. I just picked up 4 yards and we'll see what happens

Just a note..the three blue stripes are a LITTLE bit bright IMHO. I mean, they're not bad, but they do stand out a bit. The cream/tan stripe is perfect with the rest of the mossy-green, black background.
If you get some and make a kilt out of it, be sure to let us see!

It's about 5 inches, a bit small for my idea of a Great Kilt, but perfectly fine for a "modern" kilt.

Would this fabric be something to make a kilt from? I've had a look around ebay, and found "Fab Crafts UK". Does anyone have any experience with them? I'd like to hand over some tartan fabric to my mother for making a cheaper kilt for going out. Mabe it's the flannel kilt I should be making? Sounds a bit weird to me, but mabe it's time to try something new.

So I just had to go and look see what is on offer on eBay - now I have two lots of 10 metres of material on its way to me, one a navy blue pinstripe - yeah - for when I go to the office, eh? and the other a derivative of Black Watch - it claims, with a red and yellow over stripe that looks rather familiar.
I supose that is two kilts and a plaid out of each - as long as it is heavy enough - it is mostly wool though, so how bad can it be?
The bill is just under 46 UK pounds for 20 metres of fabric - including the postage.

When you buy fabric, you don't mess around, do you, Anne?

Mine just came in. Looks good! Now I just have to find time to work on it. Just moved and everything's in boxes begging to be unpacked...

I wish I'd bought another yard to make woven hose out of. Oh, well.
