kilt sock in the making photo
How about this for starters, I'm not so sure about the top, does not match the leg, so I'm rethinking that......I also found other colours which I am going to try out just for a bit of fun..

I think that looks very sharp. The hose, not the needles ... though they're sharp too.

Those will be some very nice hose... and I agree with you about the top, it would look better with another, matching pattern. I do like the top, and think if it was matching the bottom, it would be a very nice set too.

They look fantastic and as far as the different style of top, I personally like the variation. By the way, are you knitting those from a pattern or out of your head?

I think the pattern is fine for day wear. Personally, I agree with Matt Newsome.
I only wear tartan hose for dressier occassions, and even then it's usually in the evening only. I tend to wear solid colored hose in the daytime, and only lovat green for really casual wear.
The pair you show in process look fine; I kind of like the pattern change. Only I would tend not to wear white or cream colored hose.

At the moment I'm knitting the sock using my own sizings and the cable from another designer who I'm working with to get this pattern written up...

These for sure will be unique.....I found lovat blue in amongst my stash so I'm just thinking that might be next on the needles, but with me I'll have another change of mind........

I like the different pattern on the top too. Kind of makes me want to look for a pair like that, since I know I need new hose. I probably will only get one or two wearings out of the two pairs I have.
As for the color, I have only ever worn solid color. White or cream for evening wear and black or light blue for day wear. I am not a big fan of tartan hose. The common red and white ones just don't look that great with my Ancient Baird kilt, as it is a blue & green tartan with Black & Purple as the secondary colors.

Patterns I have come across for single colour fancy hose tend to have the tops in a different pattern from the leg.
I am not sure if it is because it is more difficult to match the pattern when one part is viewed upside down with respect to the other, with some patterns it is impossible, or just that it is how they were made.
I suspect that the proportions of the turnover will alter when the hose are worn - so it is difficult to judge them off the leg - the wearing will be the prooving of the pattern. The knitting already done, though, does look to have promise. I do like interesting cables.
