Hey Jim - my wife and I were at the State Fair yesterday (Sunday) - mostly to see Collective Soul who was playing at the main stage. We sat down to watch the Kildares for a couple of songs. I noticed you (based on your pictures) on one of the benches in from of the stage. It was crazy busy at the fair. I didn't have the courage to try any of the fried food. As I age, the "recovery" time after ingesting a plate of deep fried food gets longer and longer!

What was the new deep fried food contest winner this year?
I saw a documentary about it, they have a contest each year for the most innovative new fried thing.
One year deep fried Coca Cola won.
And they have deep fried butter, yes just a ball of butter. People say it's great.
I suppose it's an interesting Scotland-Texas connexion, that obsession with deep fried food. A friend who lived in Scotland told me about a dish where you take an entire pizza, cover it with a layer of chips/french fries, fold it over, and deep fry the whole thing. He says it's fantastic.

Nice Photoshop work with Big Tex! I was up at the fair a few weeks ago and really wanted to try the deep-fried Frito pie, but never got a chance.

I attended this fair from the mid-1950's (being pushed around in a stroller) until my Dad got transferred back to GA which would make my last "fair" year 1963. Thoroughly enjoyed the pictures as I've never been back West again.
For those who don't know the roughly five story tall Big Tex would take a LOT of wool!
Edt: Ooops! Didn't see the photoshop before I posted! Nice job on the Lone Star flag, too!

What Prices...
I couldn't help but notice the menu boards in one of your shots.....$6 for water, that's not exorbitant that is just plain robbery. And $8 for soft drinks. Phew...

Actually that's tickets. They are $.50 each thought trust me you wil go through a lot of money there. Between entry, parking and food, Amy and I went through about $80 and we got off cheap!!!

Most creative went to Fried Beer
Best taste went to Fried Frito Pie!!! That was delish.
I think the fried beer is either Shiner Bock or Guinness (I've heard both, so dunno) that was injected into some kind of pretzel dough, then fried. Take a bite and it dribbled out.
Not sure how the frito pie was done, but it was awesome. It was chunks of chili wrapped in fried batter - Yum!!!
There were also fried margarita... which was a funnel cake with marg in the batter.
Fried butter, I think, is more like a deep fried croissant than just dropping a glob of butter in the fryer. Though I'm not sure it's any healthier ;)
Fried Coke was... not my favourite It is essentially donut holes with coke syrup poured over top. Oh, and whipped cream. Waaaaay too sweet for me.
That fried pizza sounds good! But only if I get to share it...
