We couldn't wear that in the UK as it is too long a blade. However an interesting handle with a moonstone set in the top. Excellent! and would look so good rising from your hose.

Thank you for your kind replies. This is the first time I have made one like this and appreciate your feedback. I tend to make my blades for sgian @ 4" just because it makes the knife look proportional. Five and a half inches is legal in Texas and the smallest sgian blade I have made is 3 3/4". Honestly I have a general idea of how long I want the blade and go from there. The blade is made just like I would a hunting knife and is edge quenched and has a temperline (hamon) however I rarely etch them to bring it out. You can seen it in person but not in the photo since my picture taking skill are lacking. I was never one to have things just for looks, I like them to function as well.
Unfortunately I do not do metal engraving and envy those that can. Garth Duncan and Rab Gordan do beautiful work like that and I am humbled by Jim's (Drac) compliments as well. You are all very kind, thank you again.

Nice work. I'd like to know more about the pommel. Is that poured pewter? If so, did you drill or cast the hole for the stone?

Thank you, it was made from solid bar that it drilled and filed. My casting experiments resulted in undetermined globs of metal. I am still working on that skill.

For functionality, I also prefer a bigger knife but my earlier comment was in regards to how well it would stay in the hose. Maybe one might have to use garter ties instead of regular elastic flashes?

And how does it look... Taygrd, could you post a pic of this sgian being worn? Or anyone else with a similar sized knife in their hose?

This is a Taygrd sgian dubh w/3 1/2" blade Fits very nicely in the hose for me. I usually have the handle a little more exposed but I guess on this day I was feeling a little bashful I'll be sure to post pics of the sgian that's pictured at the beginning of this thread as I'm to be the proud owner P.S. - The flashes being worn have elastic & hold the sgian very well...

The black knife is actually very light in weight. I have a 8" sgian that is my personal knife (sgian fionn - my term) that I have worn for years. I am 6' so it never has been an issue with me. The elastic works well for those and I have not tried tied garters but after seeing some post on here I will either buy some or make some. Once I complete the sheath I will try for some leg shots The length of 8" seems to me to be about the max for sgians but I have seen some wear much bigger Here is the dress "sgian fionn" that I wear.
