I am working on my first now with a removable spike. I searched for quite a while trying to find a source for a pre-made spike and boss. The only boss available is a big one that is made for Roman shields. So I made them myself. I made what is called a dishing stump to hammer the sheet brass into to get the shape I wanted. As for the spikes, I am making mine out of 3/8 in brass rod and threading one end and tapering the other. I'll try to get you a few pics up later.
