Lovat blue and dark red would be my favorites...

Methinks Streetcar & the other fellas have the idea for hose choice. (my apology to you "other fellas.") I recognize Kyle placing the ladies under arrest for whatever infraction, but not you other two guys!
Go, have fun, don't work at, make it fun! Kilt them, for they know not, what they wear. Where am I now?

Though I must confess to having owned white hose, I've never worn them with
a kilt. Never minded natural, but prefer colored. Don't care for for the clorox
white with kilts, but it can be done better than OK. Always look better than black.
So, for Chukta. I'd be more eager to lose that white shirt than the hose. As has been pointed out, black and bright white weigh heavy visually, and it can be tricky to balance out. Especially a white shirt with no jacket. Better and more interesting to go elsewhere. I'll say for the hose, it's usually a safe bet that Lovat blue, Lovat green, and/or claret will look good with most kilts. That tartan would like any of several grays, and I myself might try a dark yellow. Depends on the shirt, and jacket or no.
For Calico: I used to have several pairs each of several different hose, and
to help with pairing I had marking pens with contrasting inks. Before wearing, I would mark each sock with a number, a letter,or a geometric shape, on the sole, Coming out of the wash, quickly and effortlessly paired, loose overhand knot to keep together, voila! Matched socks picked from drawer even blindfolded.
For xman: I like the idea of gifting choice hose, though I'd do it early. When he tries on the outfit, just say you're making sure he has a choice down the road. While you have that on, just check the fit of these for me, in case they need to be exchanged. Ooh,yeah. Those'll look great. Might work.

I like this idea! it's kind of nice because it's not saying to him 'white hose are ridiculous' rather you say 'yeah those don't look bad' and once the colored ones are on then you act like you have just tasted bacon for the first time. It may push him to choose those over the white ones. Based only on your reaction.

Trouble is, I won't be there when he tries on the kilt. He lives across the country. Besides, he's about as strong willed as I am AND he's a lawyer so he's got the skill to defend his position whether it's right or not.

Well, X-Man, I also feel that your gift will be a prod in the right direction.
I have just ordered a pair of dark green hose, and am hoping to get some other colours, but I will steer clear of white.

Mike

I would try something in a contrasting hue, but of an equivalent saturation/intensity, such as Ancient Blue. The kilt is overall warm/earthy hues so it might be nice to go the other way. Blue is a 'cool' colour so it might make a nice contrast. Or a green perhaps, not a dull green which would be lost with the kilt, but a nice teal or seafoam. Or go 'warm' with Claret. Celebrate with colour!

but my feeling on white setts like this Gordon Dress is that they are for women’s wear, not men’s evening dress.
Your feelings would be wrong. Very. Check out the thread that davidlpope posted.

Hi, Dixiecat – just after that remark was posted, David Pope directed me to the discussion you refer to. I have learned a great deal from it.
I accept now that white setts are entirely appropriate for dancers, both men and women.
But I am puzzled that no reference is made in either this thread or the other one to where the belief that white setts were for women came from. It is clearly stated in a book on my tartan shelf that they had their origin in arisaids, which were mostly worn by women.
(If I recall correctly the author was James D Scarlett. It is, of course, possible that more recent research has changed the overall picture of the development of this type of tartan.)

Mike
